Hi history lovers! I wanted to give you a few nuggets about the beginning of Holbrook Campground here in Cherokee County (GA.) In the summer of 1838 people gathered in the open air for a series of revival meetings. The next year Jesse Holbrook, a local blacksmith, received 40 acres (sounds like a lot) for shoeing a man’s horse. He soon after donated the land to the Methodist Conference for a camp meeting site.

The present structure was built in 1890 and surrounded by over 50 cabins. The original settlers came in wagons with their chickens and children. Water was obtained from springs and a local well. The fortunate owners of the cabins stayed for up to two weeks enjoying revival preaching, early gospel music, and interacting with their neighbors.

So come this July, the tradition continues that has inspired local believers for many generations. Thanks for reading and come back soon for more interesting local history!
